Offering a Wide Range of ServicesThe Institute also offers the following diagnostic and therapeutic services: Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) Skin Test for tuberculosis screening – PPD is an antigen, a substance that stimulates the immune system to eliminate or fight foreign substances in the body. PPD is taken from dead tuberculosis bacteria.
High-flow oxygen therapy – to assure that there is enough oxygen in the blood to provide for your body's needs. There are many diseases where oxygen therapy may be useful. Oxygen therapy is used to normalize the oxygen level in blood during sleep, rest, activity and during acute illnesses in the hospital.
Aerosol therapy – this form of therapy delivers medications directly into the lungs using nebulizers or metered-dose inhalers. Specific medications that may be administered through aerosol therapy include antibiotics (these fight respiratory infections), bronchodilators (these relax smooth muscles in the airway and may assist with airway clearance), and anti-inflammatories (these help to open airways narrowed by inflammation and swelling).
Intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) – a technique used to provide patients with short-term or intermittent mechanical ventilation to augment lung expansion, deliver aerosol medication, or assist ventilation. It improves the cough mechanism and prevents collapse of the lungs. IPPB is effective in preventing post-operative pulmonary complications.
Chest physiotherapy – a group of treatments designed to improve respiratory efficiency, promote expansion of the lungs, strengthen respiratory muscles, and eliminate secretions from the respiratory system.
Incentive spirometry or sustained maximal inspiration – a technique designed to mimic natural sighing or yawning by encouraging the patient to take long, slow, deep breaths. This is accomplished by using a device that provides patients with visual or other positive feedback when they inhale at a predetermined flow rate or volume and sustain the inflation for a minimum of 3 seconds. This procedure helps improve overall lung function.
Mechanical ventilation – involves providing the patient with mechanical assistance in the breathing process. It may be used to augment the efforts of a patient who has spontaneous, but weak, breaths or for individuals who cannot breathe on their own. The Institute boasts of the latest monitoring equipment and modern mechanical ventilation machines, both for invasive and non-invasive ventilation, including the latest in portable ventilation and Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure (BIPAP). It has in its roster the latest in infant, pediatric and adult mechanical ventilation, the Sechrist Millennium Ventilation and the Vela Ventilatory Systems. |
