GI-Motility Studies and pH Laboratory
The services of the Institute also include a GI-Motility and pH monitoring laboratory which is the first and only operating unit in the country run by highly trained specialists. The laboratory offers the following specialized services:
-
24-hour pH Monitoring: measures the amount of acid that refluxes into the esophagus from the stomach and determines if excessive acid is present and if symptoms are due to reflux.
-
Esophageal Manometry: investigate problems with regards to swallowing, heartburn, regurgitation and chest pain;
-
Colon Transit Studies: measures the time taken for movement of stools through the large intestines. It evaluates the problem of constipation.
-
Balloon Expulsion Test: stimulates the act of defecation to determine if the cause of constipation is due to uncoordinated relaxation of the anal sphincter. Involves placement of a water-filled balloon in the rectum after which the patient is made to sit in the commode and expel the balloon.
The Digitrapper MK III is for prolonged ambulatory pH testing, an essential ingredient in the diagnosis and post treatment evaluation of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
