Breast Reduction

In some women with large, pendulous breasts, the weight of their breasts may cause neck, back or shoulder pain and circulation or even breathing problems. The weight may also cause discomfort as a result of brassiere straps abrading or irritating the skin. Even if physical discomfort is not a problem, some women feel uncomfortable with the large size of their breasts in proportion to the rest of their bodies as well as the “undue attention” their breasts may call. For such women, breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) may be considered. Through this procedure, women can have smaller, lighter, and firmer breasts. The surgeon may also reduce the size of the areola or nipples.
