Quezon City Trunkline:
Institute of Urology
The Institute is dedicated to the modern treatment of medical and surgical diseases of the male and female urinary system and the male reproductive system. The staff is composed of board-certified and fellowship-trained urologists who are experts in the different aspects of genito-urinary malignancy, urinary obstruction, urinary stone disease, pediatric urology, female urinary incontinence and male sexual dysfunction.
The Institute of Urology provides the following services:
Minimally invasive urology and robotic-assisted surgery: The Institute offers a wide spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures including laparoscopic and robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery, which allow the patients to undergo surgery through small incisions. These offer the advantages of minimal postoperative pain, shorter hospital stay and faster convalescent period. Complex urological procedures such as nephrectomy (kidney removal) or partial nephrectomy (nephron-sparing surgery) and even radical prostatectomy can be performed safely laparoscopically without the necessity of huge flank or abdominal incisions. Complex reconstructive urological procedures such as partial cystectomy, ureteral reimplantation and Burschcolposuspension may also be performed laparoscopically.
The Institute also prides itself of the da Vinci HD Si Surgical System, the most modern surgical platform in minimally invasive surgery today available locally only at St. Luke's Medical Center Global City. This surgical platform includes the following advantages: (1) a 3D high-definition image that is 10x the magnification of the human eye for a truer perception of depth, superior view of tissue planes and the target anatomy, thereby increasing surgical confidence (2) Endowrist technology which resembles the movement of the human hand, with multiple degrees of freedom greater than the human wrist, (3) Microsurgical precision which allows motion scaling and enhanced range of motion which helps eliminate human tremors thereby minimizing errors.
Endourology: This involves the closed manipulation of the urinary tract using video-endoscopic equipment and a variety of intracorporeal lithotripsy devices (Dornier Laser and Swiss Lithoclast Master combined pneumatic and ultrasonic lithotripters) which facilitates the minimally invasive treatment of urinary tract stones. Both rigid and flexible ureteroscopes and nephro-cystoscopes are available and may be inserted retrograde or antegrade through a percutaneous route. Endourologic techniques may also be used to treat localized tumor of the urinary system which may be removed with excision or laser ablation.
Section of Urologic Oncology: The Institute prides itself of fellowship-trained urologic oncological surgeons who are highly skilled in the techniques of open and minimally invasive cancer surgery for the treatment of tumors of the kidney, bladder, prostate and testis. The group works hand-in-hand with other subspecialties such as medical oncology, radiation oncology, and palliative care medicine to ensure a holistic approach to patients who are suffering from various stages of genito-urinary malignancy.
Female urinary incontinence management: Our incontinence experts work in tandem with uro-gynecologists to help resolve problems related to stress and urge incontinence using either medical therapy, biofeedback, open surgical or minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques to treat these conditions.
Pediatric Urology: The Institute has fellowship-trained pediatric urologists who are experts in the treatment of congenital disorders of the urinary tract such as hypospadias, vesico-ureteral reflux, congenital obstruction and urinary stone disease. Our pediatric urologists are also highly skilled in the use of both open and minimally invasive surgical techniques to treat these disorders.
Andrology and Male Infertiliy: The aging male has many medical concerns related to male factor infertility, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, benign prostatic hyperplasia, cardiovascular disease, and andropause which merit the attention of not only the urologist but also various experts from internal medicine, cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology and geriatric medicine. Together, these medical professionals help improve the patient's self-esteem, quality of life and functionality.
Brachytherapy: An alternative treatment option for prostate cancer is brachytherapy which uses permanent seed implantation of I-125 for low stage prostate cancer. Brachytherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that would require an overnight stay in the hospital.
Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL): This non-surgical approach to the treatment of urinary stones, uses shockwaves to pulverize the kidney or ureteral stones so that they can be passed readily outside of the urinary system. Majority of urinary tract stones may be treated this way. This is usually done under sedation and on an outpatient basis.
Incontinence and voiding dysfunction evaluation: At the Comprehensive Pelvic Floor Center, urodynamic evaluation may be performed to evaluate functional or anatomical causes of voiding dysfunction. Uroflowmetry is used to assess urine flow rates and vis-a-vis the use of a Postvoid Bladder Scan, is helpful to identify the different cause of bladder emptying disorders. A Urethral Sphincter Profilometry is helpful in identifying dyssynergic voiding as well as problems related to sphincter deficiency.
Prostate cancer screening and evaluation: Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of male cancer deaths in the world. Males with a familial history of prostate cancer are at risk for developing this disease. Early detection may be done through a PSA (prostate specific antigen) determination and a digital rectal exam done by an expert urologist. When there is a suspicion of cancer or malignancy, an ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy either under sedation or local anesthesia, may be done to establish the diagnosis.
The Stone and Prostate Treatment Center is a specialized center under the Institute. It is dedicated to non-surgical management of urinary tract stones and benign prostatic hyperplasia. It has the Medispec Electromagnetic ESWL machine and likewise the Medispec Transurethral Microwave Thermotherapy (TUMT) machine which may be used to treat patients with BPH who are poor candidates for surgery and those with intractable chronic bacterial prostatitis.
