H.B Calleja Heart and Vascular Institute

Total quality management for heart patients is a core competency of St. Luke's Heart Institute. Established in 1986, it is the country's first private heart center of excellence, dedicated to the management of cardiac disease and committed to providing excellent patient care. Its staff of experts are high-caliber cardiovascular specialists, all of whom have a sterling track record in heart care and cure. Equipped with the most advanced state-of-the-art equipment, the Institute's cardiologists and surgeons have successfully performed cardiovascular care over the years, and boasts of a 98 percent success rate for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), as well as percutaneous cardiovascular interventions which are recognized to be the best in the country. Likewise, patients benefit from excellent pre- and post-operative rehabilitation driven by "clinical expertise, cutting-edge technology, and continuing research."

Among the facilities and services of the Institute are Echocardiography; Non-Invasive Vascular Peripheral Laboratory; ECG, Holter Monitoring, and Pacemaker Clinic; Cardiac Exercise Testing and Rehabilitation; Nuclear Cardiology; Vascular and Interventional Radiology; PET studies; MRI cardiac imaging and CT cardiac scans (especially for calcium scoring); and angiography.

In 1999, St. Luke's Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (CathLab) gave the Philippines its first endoluminal repair on a 58-year old female with thoraco-abdominal dissection. Since then, the Cardiac Cathlab has been at the forefront in recent advances in Cardiovascular Interventional Therapeutics. It continues to offer treatment alternatives to a host of cardiovascular diseases, alleviates patients' discomfort and reduce mortality and morbidity risks in selected patients.

St. Luke's latest addition to its state-of-the-art equipment is the Xper FD10 Cathlab system with flat panel detector, the first and only Flat Panel Detector CathLab in the Philippines. This ultra-modern machine provides clinicians with enhanced image quality, increased efficiency and excellent clinical performance while reducing radiation dose to both patient and physician. This translates to the safest and most precise cardiovascular diagnostic and treatment tool in the country today. Yet another imaging system that is being used only at St. Luke's and is part of the CathLab's vast array of diagnostic modalities is the Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS), considered a major development in the invasive imaging of coronary arteries that complement conventional high-resolution angiography. Whereas angiographies provide an image of the blood vessel's lumen or cavity, the IVUS allows detailed visualization of the vascular anatomy by using a miniature transmitter and receiver called a transducer at the end of a flexible catheter. The catheter is placed into a patient's coronary artery by standard catheterization techniques. The IVUS then yields high-quality, cross-sectional images of the atherosclerotic plaque and surrounding vascular structures. The use of IVUS to answer questions not adequately addressed by angiography has established it as an important technology in the St. Luke's CathLab, both in the diagnostic setting and as a support to intervention.
